Trezor.io/Startยฎ โ€” Starting Up Your Device

A friendly, emoji-forward walkthrough to safely set up your Trezor hardware wallet. Small steps, big security. โ›‘๏ธโœจ

๐Ÿ“ฆ

Welcome & Unboxing

Start by inspecting the package. If seals look broken or the box is tampered with, stop and contact support. Safety first!

  • Inside: device, USB cable, recovery (seed) card(s), quick-start guide.
  • Check for tamper-evidence holograms and intact packaging. ๐Ÿ”
  • Keep packaging until setup is fully complete โ€” useful if support is needed.
๐Ÿ”Œ

Open Trezor.io/Start & Trezor Suite

Go to trezor.io/start โ€” that page guides you to download or open Trezor Suite (desktop or browser). Using the official site prevents fake apps. ๐ŸŒ

  • Prefer the desktop Suite for full features, or choose the web app if you prefer not to install anything. ๐Ÿ’ป
  • Always verify the URL and certificate in your browser address bar. ๐Ÿ”
โš™๏ธ

Connect & Install Firmware

New devices are typically shipped without firmware. Trezor Suite will prompt you to install the latest firmware โ€” allow it to finish fully.

  • Connect the device with the supplied cable and follow Suite prompts.
  • Do not disconnect during firmware install; this can take a few minutes. โณ
๐Ÿงพ

Create Wallet & Backup

When creating a new wallet, the device generates a recovery backup (commonly 12โ€“24 words). This is your lifeline โ€” write it down, offline.

  • Use the supplied recovery card to write each word exactly as shown. โœ๏ธ
  • Never store recovery words as photos, plain text files, or cloud backups. Keep them offline. ๐Ÿ—„๏ธ
  • If you prefer extra safety, consider a metal backup for fire/flood resistance.
๐Ÿ”

Set a PIN

The PIN protects access to the device. Choose one you can remember but others wonโ€™t guess. The device will ask for PINs on sign/transfer actions.

  • Never reveal your PIN to anyone โ€” Trezor support wonโ€™t ask for it. ๐Ÿšซ
  • Be mindful of shoulder-surfing while entering your PIN in public. ๐Ÿ‘€
๐Ÿง

Optional: Passphrase (Advanced)

A passphrase acts as an extra, secret word โ€” like a 25th seed word. Powerful, but losing it means permanent loss of access. Use only if you understand the trade-offs.

  • Passphrase adds plausible deniability and extra security for advanced setups.
  • Record the passphrase separately and never share it. If forgotten, funds are irretrievable. โš ๏ธ

Do a Test Transaction

Before moving large sums, send a small amount to your new Trezor address to confirm everything works. Verify addresses on both device and Suite.

  • Always confirm the receiving address on the device display โ€” this avoids address-replacement malware. โœ…
  • Once satisfied, move larger balances in stages for peace of mind.
๐Ÿฆ

Store Device & Recovery Securely

Keep your device and recovery words in a safe place. Consider geographically separated copies and a fireproof storage option.

  • Do not share recovery words or photos of them with anyone. ๐Ÿ”’
  • Consider legal arrangements (trusted person, safe deposit box) for long-term inheritance planning.
